The App Business

August 6, 2013 by wroolie Leave a Comment

So, I’ve been selling apps for 11 months now.  It seems so much longer.  While daily revenue is going up every day, it’s still at a slower pace than I would like.  But up is definitely better than down.

Overpass has now put out dozens of apps.  It’s difficult for me to give an exact number because many of them are based on a similar theme.  For example, we have language learning apps to learn multiple languages like Hindi, Mandarin, Arabic, etc.  We come out with a few new languages every few months.  So, I tend to count those as one app.

It has been very exciting to watch the apps grow.  In a few weeks, we should reach a half a million installs all around the globe.  My daily routine is to wake up very early and check app statistics and reviews before the developers start work (around 5:30am for me).  I’m still burning the candle at both ends.  But it is a lot of fun.

Overpass is growing.  It has 4 full time developers and dozens of apps used by hundreds of thousands of users.  These are exciting times.

Value-less LinkedIn Endorsements

July 15, 2013 by wroolie Leave a Comment

Does anyone use LinkedIn endorsements?

I know that’s the reason they exist. Someone can endorse you for a skill. But, has an employer (or recruitment agent) ever actually paid attention to this?

My C# skills have been endorsed by my childhood friend. He, as far as I know, knows nothing about C# and does not even know that’s what I work with. If it was an endorsement of “Star Trek trivia knowledge”, then it would make sense.

My project management skills have been endorsed by software companies in India that I have never worked with (but they would like to work with me so endorsed me).

LinkedIn endorsements have lost all value due to the way they are so easy give. LinkedIn has made it so easy to give endorsements in bulk (“endorse all”) that there is no reason to consider them for job just because of their endorsements.

When someone endorses me, it makes me feel like I should endorse them back. It’s so easy to do and I feel rude if I don’t. But this further devalues them.

LinkedIn endorsements have become like Twitter followers. It’s impressive to see the number . . . but means very little.
