Finally got Ubuntu to look the way I want

February 7, 2009 by wroolie Leave a Comment

I pushed XP aside on my laptop a few months ago and installed Ubuntu Linux. I’ve done this before, but usually there is one reason I go back (like MLB TV or a new version of Visual Studio). Then XP slows way down and it’s not even worth booting up the laptop to look something up. It just takes too long.

I got a netbook a few weeks ago and put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on it. I really enjoy it an it’s the perfect size for sitting on the train and writing a blog post (but it also means I have two laptops now– one a full-size Vaio laptop and the netbook– and the iPhone and I still have my desktop with XP which I use for C# development). The netbook is great, but I wanted my Linux laptop to look as cool as people show in You Tube videos. No matter how hard I tried, I could only cusomize it so far.

But yesterday, when I was home again because of snow (the entire week has been snow and flu), I found this tutorial mby Marius Nestor on softpedia:

Now, I got my laptop desktop looking pretty slick:

I’m attempting to use a WordPress plugin called WordBook to automatically send my blog posts to Facebook.

The URL is here.

This post is just an attempt to see if it works.

Heavy snow in London

February 3, 2009 by wroolie Leave a Comment

So yesterday, the big news here in the UK is the heavy snow. I made the trip into London yesterday as usual, but found lots of trains cancelled and had to wait a long time to get in. The snow meant I couldn’t ride the motorcycle for any of the trip.

Things were so bad that we only worked a half day anyway and tried to make the difficult trip home.

Now, it’s 5:45 am and I’ve been looking through websites trying to determine whether it is worth making the effort at all today.

Here are some pictures I took yesterday:

Everyone says the same thing: in lots of places, this is nothing! True. I can’t imagine them closing down Minneapolis for this kind of snow.

I tried to act all tough– like I can handle this easily because I’m American and we see this all the time. Of course, I grew up in California– so I am just as inexperienced as anyone else.
